One of the best things about Buckethead is he has now issued over 121 albums, four special releases and one EP under his bucket and mask, all full of his Kentucky-fried guitar-playing chicken goodness. That's real amazing isn't it, releasing nearly twice amount of the albums in his lifetime that Frank Zappa released during his lifetime.

This is a series, make sure you catch the rest: Top 10 Guitar Solos Top 10 Classic Rock Guitar Riffs Top 10 Hard Rock Guitar Riffs Top 10 Heavy Metal Guitar Riffs Top 10 Instrumental Songs: Classic Rock and Roll Top 10 Band Guitarists Top 10 Solo Guitarists Top 10 Hard Rock Bands of the 1980s Top 10 Heavy Metal Bands
I agree with no.1. Steve Vai often produces mellifluous emotion-laden tunes that often does not get drowned out by the usual heavy metal 'static' like some others.
#1 Orion #2 Call of Ktulu #3 To Live is To Die #4 Anesthesia #5 Transilvania #6 The Extrimist #7 Blue Monday #8 Eruption #9 The Love of God #10 La Villa Strangiato
You could add any number of amazing instrumentals to this list as any true rock/metal fan knows. "Erotomania" by Dream Theater, "Fireblossom" by Vanden Plan, "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson, "Glassgow Kiss" or "Damage Control" by John Petrucci just to name a few. You could never do just 10. However, I will say they got one thing right, "For the Love of God" is the greatest guitar instrumental of all time. Thanks for nailing it!
1: Switch 625 - Def Leppard 2: Eruption - Van Halen 3: The Call Of Kthulu - Metallica 4: Chase The Ace - AC/DC 5: Top Gun Anthem 6: Transylvania - Iron Maiden 7: Children Of The Beast - Motley Crue 8: The Hellion - Judas Priest 9: Jessica - Allman Brothers 10: Coast to Coast - Scorpions
My personal top-25 instrumental songs: 1. Transylvania - Iron Maiden 2. Voice of the Soul - Death 3. Orion - Metallica 4. Genghis Khan - Iron Maiden 5. Raise The Hammer - Hammerfall 6. Cremation - King Diamond 7. The Call Of Ktulu - Metallica 8. Into The Lungs Of Hell - Megadeth 9. To Live Is To Die - Metallica 10. Coast To Coast - Scorpions 11. Black Star - Rising Force 12. By The Dividing Stream - Ensiferum 13. Reign Of The Hammer - Hammerfall 14. Insanity - King Diamond 15. Autograph - Royal Hunt 16. The Ides Of March - Iron Maiden 17. Them - King Diamond 18. Conquer Or Die - Megadeth 19. Mozart and Madness - Savatage 20. Aphasia - Europe 21. In Memoriam - Hammerfall 22. Follow The Sign - Helloween 23. Mourn - Sentenced 24. Instrumentally Illdisposed - Illdisposed 25. Mr. Scary - Dokken
And by hell, they had to single out Orion for not having cool guitar, and because,"bass". This is a instrumental top 10, not top 10 guitar solos. Morons!
Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen Both are quite mesmerizing to watch, I could so easily get lost in the night with a set of headphones and listen either one of them playing their guitars , on a visual note Eddie is so easy on the eyes as well!!
10. Call of Ktulu by Metallica 9. Genghis Khan by Iron Maiden 8. Into The Lungs of Hell by Megadeth 7. Rat Salad by Black Sabbath 6. Mr. Scary by Dokken 5. Get Out Of My Yard by Paul Gilbert 4. Trilogy Op 5 by Yngwie J Malmsteen 3. Jordan by Buckethead 2. Mabel's Fatal Fable by Jason Becker 1. Eruption by Van Halen HB: For the Love of God by Steve Vai and RR by Randy Rhoads
Austin Jones That's why I said that's up to you. By the way, didn't even finish the video. Watchmojo videos are like smoking, you know they give you cancer but you keep going on.
Does anyone know that Joe Satriani was Steve Vai's guitar teacher? So that makes Joe at the top of my list ever. Not only is he a master of guitar but his all around beautiful being makes him the best. You will never find attitude from Joe. His dedication of spending over 9 hours everyday practicing and learning for years make him truly the best. Joe becomes One with his guitar as he's playing. It's not an extension of the playing that makes him the best, it's him being the guitar when he's playing. You can feel the passion and love in every song that he plays. I've never seen anyone better in my life and I've seen a lot in my life.
To live is to die has lyrics, Hetfield quotes what Cliff had written on his gravestone around 7 mins in: “Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home”
Dream Theater have some killer instrumentals that show off the guitar. I would point to Enigma Machine and The Dance Of Eternity as two of my favourite Dream Theater instrumentals.
My list: 10)dokken - Mr scary 9)metallica - the Call of ktulu 8)steve vai - tender surrender 7)yngwie malmsteen - black star 6)eric johnson - cliffs of dover 5)buckethead - soothsayer 4)ted nugent and the amboy dukes - hibernation 3)iron maiden - transylvania 2)jason becker -mabels fatal fable 1)eddie van Halen - eruption
Steve Vai's 'Tender Surrender' is waaaaaay better than 'For the Love of God'. I'm also missing Rush's 'La Villa Strangiato' and some Dream Theater, like 'The Dance of Eternity' or 'Overture 1928', pure gold!
Liquid Tension Experiment had some great ones on their two famous self-titled album releases, but of these I carry the brightest flame for "Paradigm Shift." Derek Sherinian's "Day of the Dead" also gives me goosebumps, with Allan Holdsworth and Zakk Wylde combining vastly different styles to create an otherworldly masterpiece.
Ehhh, I guess. Rush comes pretty close to metal in many cases, definitely hard rock. Early stuff like "Working Man" is pretty metal, and everything on their newest album is pretty damn hard hitting… But no, not technically "metal."
The funny part is for Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption", they didn't shown any of that actual song in the clip! That's the solo from the US Festival 1983. Eruption was part of it, just not shown in this video.
Hmmm, there are some missing of course. Among them; "Miles of Machines" by Jeff Loomis, "Time Traveller" by Michael Angelo Batio "Angel of Darkness" by Andy James "Mask of the Red Death" by Michael Romeo "Glasgow Kiss" by John Petrucci "Screaming Symphony" by Chris Impellitteri "Thunder Current" by Frank Gambale "Black Magic" by Reb Beach "Speed Metal Messiah" by Joe Stump "Morning Star" by Vinnie Moore
Gary Ormond Wow, really nice picks! Truly, artists like Jeff Loomis, Michael Romeo and Vinnie Moore deserve spots on this list far more than James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett for instance.
It's funny that she says Ktulu wins over Orion because they are featuring guitar mastery. Isn't a bass still a guitar? It was the last time I checked, and Cliff is one reason, along with Iron Maiden's bassist, that I want to learn bass.
They are from Alabama, and don't come back with that anti hillbilly shit. I live in the official Moonshine Capital of the world, and the people around here are not what everyone says they are.
My top: 5) The Voice of the Soul - Death 4) The Call of Ktulu - DAVE MUSTAINE 3) Crystal Ann - Annihilator 2) Eruption - Van Halen 1) Dialectic Chaos - Megadeth
***** So you judge an artist based on popularity? Do you really think popularity is a valid way of discerning talent? In that case, lil wayne is way more talented than Vai and justin bieber puts Vai to shame. You know, cause popularity is everything.
***** I have more friends that are into Buckethead than I do friends into Steve Vai. In any case, you didn't prove anything there or even give a rebuttal. You just repeated the argumentum ad populum fallacy
***** Oh, how hilarious. First you respond by saying "proof is in the pudding" and now you're saying that you have no proof at all. Nice cop-out there,
***** Yeah, except your first response was an attempt at proof with a claim that there was proof. Indeed, you don't have to provide evidence for an opinion, but you didn't initially pass of your opinion as an opinion. You passed it off as fact because you're a complete moron. When you say "proof is in the pudding" and then give reasons for thinking your stance is true, then that is the equivalent of saying that your opinion is a fact and you have proof for it. The fact that you think you know how logic and debate works is hilarious because you're completely incompetent XD
+pankaj rai Probably because he's more associated with Prog rock, rather than hard rock, or HM. It's a pity, because he's a wonderful player, but those were the limitations of this list (which, like all of these lists, is ridiculous anyway).
I know it's nowhere near these greats in the video, but Chimaira's 'Implements of Destruction' is a beast of an instrumental track. Those of you who heard it know what I'm talking about.
soothsayer is like a drug/marijuana/astral medicine which elevates you higher and higher, at least for me. For the love of god is good but in my opinion it is not close to soothsayer.
In my opinion: 1. Cliffs of Dover, Eric Johnson 2. For the Love of God, Steve Via 3. Mr. Scary, George Lynch 4. (And I may get some hate for this one) Prelude, Slaughter 5. Orion, Metallica 6. Transylvania, Iron Maiden 7. Double Guitar Shred, Michael Angelo Batio 8. 9. 10. I can't decide for 8-10....
Instrumental gods like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Buckethead could be able to make incredibly complex and rapid instrumental pieces every single day But they can never get such feel and melody as Metallica’s Orion
Carloscda40 Eruption is a nice piece, it burst onto the scene and was the start of that era of flashy guitar playing but it is not technically that hard but it is great to listen too. I would still list it in the top ten just for what it represents, but not 2
What Ed did back then was ground breaking and made everyone step their game up. Plus it made countless people take up guitar playing. And to prove my point watch that 5pt Mental doc on VH1. When they talked about Eddie all of his piers said the same thing WTH, oh ish!
Death - Voice of the Soul Death - Cosmic Sea Blotted Science - Amnesia Cannibal Corpse - From Skin to Liquid Metallica - Orion Dream Theater - Scene Seven 1: The Dance of Eternity Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness TOOL - Triad Deftones - U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select Start In Flames - Dialogue With The Stars
You may be right, yet this list is for hard rock and heavy metal music. Since you are a fan of Theater you must know that they do not belong to these categories :)
Yet again regardless what your personal believes are, some things are objective. Case in point Theater, Ayreon, Queensryche etc are progressive metal bands, they have totally different music, vocals, style of play, solo riffs and they do not qualify for this video...It is like putting black/death metal instrumental songs on this video. So the list is perfectly fine but your comment is not :)
if you'd read the notes under the vid, you'd see that he's on the first list, which is linked. besides, cliffs of dover doesn't qualify as hard rock or heavy metal.
PIcking "Call of Ktulhu" over "Orion" is forgivable...so is Black Star over Icarus Dream Suite. So happy they included "Mr. Scary". Honorable mention from me: "Tears of Sahara" by Tony MacAlpine (and George Lynch)
christoffer hofs I mentioned Erotomania because it is DT's most played instrumental, specially by other people. But, yes, Stream of Consciousness is also fantastic, and it should be an honorable mention at least.
Cotramjoxxx And Malmsteen's Black Star is neoclassical. That doesn't mean that they are also hard rock or heavy metal. Any instrumental song, by hard rock and heavy metal groups, has progressive traits, specially Satriani's and Steve Vai's.
So what in the hell is Buckethead doing in the list if its only "hard rock and heavy metal" he is also prog. Aside from that Dream Theater is Metal. Prog metal is a subgenre of metal, like trash metal ( Metallica), either way it is metal.
#1 Orion #2 The Call of Ktulu #3 To Live is To Die #4 Anesthesia #5 LA Villa Strangiato #6 Transilvania #7 Blue Monday #8 Eruption #9 The Extrimist #10
I know Binge and Grab by Buckethead has lyrics or whatever, but the instrumental version is amazing, in my opinion, and the main riff is somewhere in my top 10 favourite riffs of all time.
+Svil Buscus oh shit can't believe I fucking forgot, well that's embarrassing. Might have to go into exile and stop calling myself a Metalhead for a while... but in all seriousness, when I think of instrumental metal songs I think of virtuosos like becker, friedman, vai etc so I wasn't even thinking about bands, still embarrassing though. But altitudes has way more emotion man
As a Buckethead fan, I feel so happy about this list. Not only because Soothsayer and Nottingham Lace, two of my favourites by him, both make an appearance, but also because he makes it so far up the list, beating out Metallica and Malmsteen. Not saying they're any inferior in my eyes, however, since I pretty much grew up listening to their handiwork. I'm just trying to say More people need to give Buckethead a listen. Those who haven't yet, I'd say it's not an understatement at all when I say you're missing out. ^__^ Kinda sad other G3 guitarists like John Petrucci and Steve Morse couldn't make it on here, but hey, gotta give the guys at Watchmojo credit for getting the 10 we did find here. Don't worry WM, I still love you. Also, For The Love Of God, Vai is the best! :D
No Dream Theater? Plenty of good instrumental material there. Especially "Dance of Eternity"
sschafi1 or Ytse Jam don't you think? Well that's my personal favorite.
Stream of Consciousness?
Sadly, Dream Theater is neither a hard rock nor a heavy metal band.
Erotomania
Glasgow kiss
I believe that Voice of The Soul by Death definitely deserved to be on this list at least as an honourable mention .
+Mr Napalm no voice of the souls? i am not watching this anymore. That track is the best instrumental song ever
+Mr Napalm Agreed. That song is the reason why I clicked on this video.
That could be the best instrumental ever
Yes such an amazing track
exactly!!!
>Choosing Call of Cthulu because Orion focuses on Cliff and then plays a guitar only section of Orion
I sometimes really worry about the mental health of WatchMojo staff
+100.
Yeah, it's like they don't even know what a bass sounds like or why the track is impressive
The bass guitar is a guitar too. So under-appreciated smh
Orion over ktulu
Cliffs bass did sound a lot more like a real 6 string so therefore we win :D
I was actually surprised to see Buckethead. As an amazing guitarist, he's often ignored by mainstream media.
i agree but his best solo is in there was a time
One of the best things about Buckethead is he has now issued over 121 albums, four special releases and one EP under his bucket and mask, all full of his Kentucky-fried guitar-playing chicken goodness. That's real amazing isn't it, releasing nearly twice amount of the albums in his lifetime that Frank Zappa released during his lifetime.
I fucking got so happy when I saw Buckethead on there
OrinAndUtsuho Kaenbyou tell some good album of buckethead i never heard of them until right now and that was some goo guitar playing

awesome list, this had so much of my musical influences, still wish you woulda picked bucketheads jordan lol but awesome list
illmcchickens1 I was thinking the same!!! Jordan!
crimsonwerecat right, hey at least buckethead was on the list, if you havent heard the song lebron by him thats a very good one too,
illmcchickens1 Bucket lost a bit of credibility for G n R with me but he has to be the most prolific guitarist ever.
Jaymzofsteel buckethead has been in and out of g and r for about 20 years man
I agree with no.1. Steve Vai often produces mellifluous emotion-laden tunes that often does not get drowned out by the usual heavy metal 'static' like some others.
Orion will always be the best Metallica instrumental.
I like Orion, because of Cliff but ‘To live is to die’ is beautiful
i prefer call of ktulu because of the endings
TO LIVE IS TO DIE IS THE BEST INSTRUMENTAL EVER FUCKING MADEE
And Pulling Teeth
#1 Orion
#2 Call of Ktulu
#3 To Live is To Die
#4 Anesthesia
#5 Transilvania
#6 The Extrimist
#7 Blue Monday
#8 Eruption
#9 The Love of God
#10 La Villa Strangiato
You could add any number of amazing instrumentals to this list as any true rock/metal fan knows. "Erotomania" by Dream Theater, "Fireblossom" by Vanden Plan, "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson, "Glassgow Kiss" or "Damage Control" by John Petrucci just to name a few. You could never do just 10. However, I will say they got one thing right, "For the Love of God" is the greatest guitar instrumental of all time. Thanks for nailing it!
Orion is the Best Instrumental Song Ever!!!!
My top 3 Metallica Instrumentals
1. Orion
2.To Live Is To Die
3.Call of Ktulu
I prefer suicide and redemption as my number one
Dei Sai no
Youre ignorant
Dei Sai fax

6: Transylvania - Iron Maiden
7: Children Of The Beast - Motley Crue
8: The Hellion - Judas Priest
9: Jessica - Allman Brothers
10: Coast to Coast - Scorpions
And in the correct order!!!
Def Leppard ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
WatchMojo clearly has never heard of the entire prog rock genre.
Read the title, nice and slowly: "Hard rock and Heavy metal"
@@YuuzhanSith Read, nice and slowly, when he wrote his comment
Dream Theater - Ytse Jam, Stream of consciousness, Erotomania, Dance of Eternity..?!
Exactly.
to fit dream theater this list would need to be called "Top 10 godly played instrumental metal songs"
Martin Jelínek And Acid Rain, When The Water Breaks by Liquid Tension Experiment... underrated bands.
DT is the most underrated band of all time.
Yes why watch mojo never says dream theter they have a good drumer, guuitarist
Voice of The Soul
One of the greatest pieces of music to be made. And it is guitar exclusive. No drums, no vocals, no bass.
and chuck one of the greatest musicians ever \m/
Fuck yeah man, genius musician.
My personal top-25 instrumental songs:
1. Transylvania - Iron Maiden
2. Voice of the Soul - Death

+Mickey Holm Do a fucking list! Yours blows this shit away
***** I will try, thanks for the compliment :)
what a genius list from a genius guy
The lack of Dream Theater and/or Liquid Tension Experiment upsets me
I was about to say Dream Theater but someone said it for me
how can someone forget dream theater
+The Pho Eater That´s annoying, a truly shame.
+The Pho Eater yeah! Dance of Eternity
+The Pho Eater Erotomania or Hell's Kitchen... Dream Theater
Death - Voice of The Soul.
came for orion, left when they put call of ktulu instead and at #9
same. disappointing
I feel that Call of Ktulu had more atmosphere, but Orion was more of a complete song
call of ktulu is amazing though but yea Orion is on another level.
And by hell, they had to single out Orion for not having cool guitar, and because,"bass". This is a instrumental top 10, not top 10 guitar solos. Morons!
Top Secret why do you have to be stupid and ignorant at the same time
....Top 5 should have been:
5. Mr. Scary
4. Orion
3. Technical Difficulties
2. Cliffs of Dover
1. Eruption
Cliffs of Dover is not Heavy metal sorry
I like scarified more than technical difficulties
Guitarist6494 Cliffs of Dover is on the Classic Rock instrumentals
Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen Both are quite mesmerizing to watch, I could so easily get lost in the night with a set of headphones and listen either one of them playing their guitars , on a visual note Eddie is so easy on the eyes as well!!
Stinger 1nRockZone Cliffs Of Dover is still considered heavy rock. He shreds blues scales and that gives it that classical hard rock sound
Instrumental rock and metal songs are TOTALLY underrated.
Megadeth - Into The Lungs Of Hell should be on this list. If you don't know it, check it out. It's epic.
Daniel Jackson yup
10. Call of Ktulu by Metallica
9. Genghis Khan by Iron Maiden
8. Into The Lungs of Hell by Megadeth
7. Rat Salad by Black Sabbath
6. Mr. Scary by Dokken
5. Get Out Of My Yard by Paul Gilbert
4. Trilogy Op 5 by Yngwie J Malmsteen
3. Jordan by Buckethead
2. Mabel's Fatal Fable by Jason Becker
1. Eruption by Van Halen
HB: For the Love of God by Steve Vai and RR by Randy Rhoads
+William Love it's an instrumental. it was released as a song when Eddie make the riffs
Came for Orion.
Me too 😑 Orion>ktulu
+deadlyarcher06 number 1 and 2
same dude
+LordOfMetal \m/ 1. orion 2. ktulu
+TheCryptCrusader nice
I must be the only one that puts To Live is To Die over any other 'tallica instrumental.
It ties with Orion, just AWESOME
To Live is To Die has some words in it, still a lot of people consider it instrumental. I think it's kinda up to you how do you consider it
Remember though, "or the Love of God" also has some words in it, and it hit number 1 on this list.
Austin Jones That's why I said that's up to you. By the way, didn't even finish the video.
Watchmojo videos are like smoking, you know they give you cancer but you keep going on.
Amen to that.
BucketGod can never be compared with anyone, any band, any creature else. Never.
Bucketgod? Lol.
myasymmetricallife True my friend
myasymmetricallife This comment is 1000% true
hell fucking yeah im here just to see him
It would be so funny if any person would think Buckethead is mortal.
The Call of Kthulu should have been higher, it was such a great way to end (in my opinion) the greatest Metallica album!
Dave Mustaine has writing credit on Metallica's Call of Ktulu and you can really hear his influence. My vote for #1
Does anyone know that Joe Satriani was Steve Vai's guitar teacher? So that makes Joe at the top of my list ever. Not only is he a master of guitar but his all around beautiful being makes him the best. You will never find attitude from Joe. His dedication of spending over 9 hours everyday practicing and learning for years make him truly the best. Joe becomes One with his guitar as he's playing. It's not an extension of the playing that makes him the best, it's him being the guitar when he's playing. You can feel the passion and love in every song that he plays. I've never seen anyone better in my life and I've seen a lot in my life.
One Word: Orion
RIP Cliff Burton
And to live is to die
It never was a good song
@@_nurmi06 Thats my favourite song ever
To live is to die has lyrics,
Hetfield quotes what Cliff had written on his gravestone around 7 mins in:
“Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home”

This video introduced me to Jason Becker and Paul Gilbert. Now they're one of my two favorite guitarists. Thanks WatchMojo!
YES. I was hoping it was Soothsayer, so much fucking emotion in that shit
top 3 were spot on... Many can argue the Satch and Vai choices with so many greats but still great list
Yes! Jason Becker! I didnt expect to find him in this list
Jason deserved to be there but I think the speed metal Symphony or images from cacophony (also by Jason) are better
Dream Theater have some killer instrumentals that show off the guitar. I would point to Enigma Machine and The Dance Of Eternity as two of my favourite Dream Theater instrumentals.
Actually a pretty solid list here, though I wouldn't have minded seeing Death's "Voice of the Soul"
My list:
10)dokken - Mr scary
9)metallica - the Call of ktulu
8)steve vai - tender surrender
7)yngwie malmsteen - black star
6)eric johnson - cliffs of dover
5)buckethead - soothsayer
4)ted nugent and the amboy dukes - hibernation
3)iron maiden - transylvania
2)jason becker -mabels fatal fable
1)eddie van Halen - eruption
Death - Voice to the soul ?????Metallica - Orion ?????Marty Friedman - Forbiden city????
Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
Already in the classic rock category
Now Buckethead has way more than just 50 albums.
+Mythic Rain with the pikes it's like above 300 or something
AlexTheShredder Yea, Bucket sure is a prodigy just like Steve and many others.
He did over double that in the year watchmojo posted this video
450
Now is 450 in total.
Michael Angelo Batio should be mention
Steve Vai's 'Tender Surrender' is waaaaaay better than 'For the Love of God'.
I'm also missing Rush's 'La Villa Strangiato' and some Dream Theater, like 'The Dance of Eternity' or 'Overture 1928', pure gold!
I agree with that 100%...I think it's Vai's best, hands down!
I think both are great but
For the love of god >>>>>> Tender surrender
Arnau Orengo Guardiola No it’s not. Even Vai prefers for the love of god. Rush was on the other list. They’re not even hard rock!!!
Strangiato is in the classic rock list
Liquid Tension Experiment had some great ones on their two famous self-titled album releases, but of these I carry the brightest flame for "Paradigm Shift."
Derek Sherinian's "Day of the Dead" also gives me goosebumps, with Allan Holdsworth and Zakk Wylde combining vastly different styles to create an otherworldly masterpiece.
+TheFashionbugs : I prefer to think of both the band and their fans as color-neutral.
No "YYZ" or "La Villa Strangiata" by RUSH???
no, because that isn't metal. they are #1 on the rock n roll list though.
Ehhh, I guess. Rush comes pretty close to metal in many cases, definitely hard rock. Early stuff like "Working Man" is pretty metal, and everything on their newest album is pretty damn hard hitting… But no, not technically "metal."
Good lookin' out about that other list, too! Thanks!
Jesse D'Angelo no problem. RUSH is number 1 on the best 3 man groups list as well.
It's actually "La Villa Strangiato" with an O at the end.
you nailed it on the #1
now this video really has ALL of the greats in it. well done
Surfing with the aliens has a special place in heart.
Have you ever heard Dosan?
Defently missing Death - Voice of the Soul!
To Live Is To die. masterpiece. interlude and everything.
The best Metallica instrumental is either Orion or anesthesia (pulling teeth)
Orion or TLITD
How did all of us forget anaesthesia, my apologies that is the greatest instrumental in existence
The funny part is for Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption", they didn't shown any of that actual song in the clip! That's the solo from the US Festival 1983. Eruption was part of it, just not shown in this video.
For legal reasons, I'm assuming.
Nah, they showed parts of "Spanish Fly" and "Mean Streets". Or maybe, idk.
I noticed the same thing...Nothing from "Eruption" in that clip at all.
Hmmm, there are some missing of course. Among them;
"Miles of Machines" by Jeff Loomis,
"Time Traveller" by Michael Angelo Batio
"Angel of Darkness" by Andy James
"Mask of the Red Death" by Michael Romeo
"Glasgow Kiss" by John Petrucci
"Screaming Symphony" by Chris Impellitteri
"Thunder Current" by Frank Gambale
"Black Magic" by Reb Beach
"Speed Metal Messiah" by Joe Stump
"Morning Star" by Vinnie Moore
No one mentions eric johnson? Cliffs of dover , nice song! nope?
schizofrayd Dude, we're talking hard rock and heavy metal.
Some Animals as Leaders song on that list would be awesome too
Gary Ormond Wow, really nice picks! Truly, artists like Jeff Loomis, Michael Romeo and Vinnie Moore deserve spots on this list far more than James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett for instance.
I had to do a big facepalm when she said that only Orion is a masterpiece of cliffs awesomeness and ktulu shows only James' and kirks' skills.
I agree, I would have had Orion or Anesthesia on this list instead regardless of the most impressive parts being the bass.
You're right. In Kthulu bass line is masterpiece. It's like lead guitar.
It's funny that she says Ktulu wins over Orion because they are featuring guitar mastery. Isn't a bass still a guitar? It was the last time I checked, and Cliff is one reason, along with Iron Maiden's bassist, that I want to learn bass.
Both should be on the list, but alas 1 per band. I still choose Ktulu over Orion.
Orion is probably the greatest song ever written, well at least right after All Along the Watchtower, Voodoo Child, and Free Bird.
Free Bird? HAHAHAHAHA
Is there a problem with liking the most iconic Southern Rock song ever written?
Oliver Marshall Free bird...the Kentucky national anthem.
They are from Alabama, and don't come back with that anti hillbilly shit. I live in the official Moonshine Capital of the world, and the people around here are not what everyone says they are.
"greatest song ever written" is perhaps not a well chosen term
YES MOJO!! Please forgive me for my previous doubt. Aces people!!!!
My top:
5) The Voice of the Soul - Death
4) The Call of Ktulu - DAVE MUSTAINE
3) Crystal Ann - Annihilator
2) Eruption - Van Halen
1) Dialectic Chaos - Megadeth
Soothsayer was the best piece on this list imo.
*****
That's a rather bold claim. Prove it.
*****
So you judge an artist based on popularity? Do you really think popularity is a valid way of discerning talent? In that case, lil wayne is way more talented than Vai and justin bieber puts Vai to shame. You know, cause popularity is everything.
*****
I have more friends that are into Buckethead than I do friends into Steve Vai. In any case, you didn't prove anything there or even give a rebuttal. You just repeated the argumentum ad populum fallacy
*****
Oh, how hilarious. First you respond by saying "proof is in the pudding" and now you're saying that you have no proof at all. Nice cop-out there,
*****
Yeah, except your first response was an attempt at proof with a claim that there was proof.
Thank you. .. finally a Mojo video that picked the right number 1..
Vai deserves it, hes amazing.
Soothsayer is the number one!!!
john petrucci is forgotten here why?
+pankaj rai Probably because he's more associated with Prog rock, rather than hard rock, or HM. It's a pity, because he's a wonderful player, but those were the limitations of this list (which, like all of these lists, is ridiculous anyway).
Agreed...
+pankaj rai Lost not forgotten
BECAUSE HE FUCKING SUCKS
Leo B god forgive him
Omg, I remember Blackstar By Malmsteen coming out pin the early 80s...... Awesome
Yngwie Malmsteen's "Black Star" should have been number one.
Soothsayer should've been higher on the list way better than eruption and for the love of god just nothing can beat buckethead for me
steve vai is the guitar god...shame on you...
Jason Walls No Buckethead is the guitar god ...shame on you...
What about Slash?
Esteban Donoso
Two names for all of you: Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine. Check out Hangar 18 if you don't believe me!
Slanthrax Mexodus Hanger 18 is not instrumental. Maybe 'Into the Lungs of Hell.'
I know it's nowhere near these greats in the video, but Chimaira's 'Implements of Destruction' is a beast of an instrumental track. Those of you who heard it know what I'm talking about.
REAL #1 Voice of Souls - Death, if you think it isn't, then you had never listened
soothsayer should be number 1
ya, agree.
it should have been the number....
how is it better than For the love of god? O.o
soothsayer is like a drug/marijuana/astral medicine which elevates you higher and higher, at least for me. For the love of god is good but in my opinion it is not close to soothsayer.
great choices! Iron Maiden on the list was a pleasant surprise...love it!
Vai is my favorite solo artist hands down, but come on where's Eric Johnson with Cliffs of Dover that was a masterpiece.
craig howard It’s not hard rock or metal. Go to top 10 rock instrumentals for that pick.
Although their instrumentals aren't guitar-based exclusively, you should've included some Dream Theater
In my opinion:
1. Cliffs of Dover, Eric Johnson
2. For the Love of God, Steve Via
3. Mr. Scary, George Lynch
4. (And I may get some hate for this one) Prelude, Slaughter
5. Orion, Metallica
6. Transylvania, Iron Maiden
7. Double Guitar Shred, Michael Angelo Batio
8.
9.
10. I can't decide for 8-10....
Instrumental gods like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Buckethead could be able to make incredibly complex and rapid instrumental pieces every single day
But they can never get such feel and melody as Metallica’s Orion
I was becoming worried as the list was going on and Eruption was no where to be seen and then Boom! Number 2
Which**
***** lol eruption overrated? k...
*****
Not that great.. REALLY?! How old are you & what drugs are you smoking?!!
Death - Voice of the Soul
Death - Cosmic Sea
Blotted Science - Amnesia
Cannibal Corpse - From Skin to Liquid
Metallica - Orion
Dream Theater - Scene Seven 1: The Dance of Eternity
Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness
TOOL - Triad
Deftones - U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select Start
In Flames - Dialogue With The Stars
If you make a top 10 instrumental anything without mentioning John Petrucci or Dream Theater you have no place ranking music.
stream of consciousness is by far may favourite instrumental
ProjectGamingNation Damn straight.
You may be right, yet this list is for hard rock and heavy metal music. Since you are a fan of Theater you must know that they do not belong to these categories :)
personally i would put prog in between hard rock and metal so....
An honourable mention should have been John Petrucci with anything off of Suspended Animation, with songs like Damage Control or Glasgow Kiss.
Those would be the two I'd have chosen too, although DT's Dance of Eternity I think would rank higher.
Little known fact that Paul Gilbert listens to books on tape while playing live in concert. That's how good he is.
Voice of the soul by Death?
I still think Cliffs of Dover by Eric johnson should have been on that list somewhere
The only reason I wanted to post here was to say what you did. In fact it should be in the top 5 period.......
Agree 100%.
if you'd read the notes under the vid, you'd see that he's on the first list, which is linked. besides, cliffs of dover doesn't qualify as hard rock or heavy metal.
Top 10 Instrumental Songs: Hard Rock and Heavy Metal
PIcking "Call of Ktulhu" over "Orion" is forgivable...so is Black Star over Icarus Dream Suite. So happy they included "Mr. Scary".
Honorable mention from me: "Tears of Sahara" by Tony MacAlpine (and George Lynch)
Needs Dream Theater
Most of them are one-(guitar)solo songs, they're not really band instrumentals.
Where is Erotomania by Dream Theater?
And what about Stream of Consciousness? (Dream Theater again...)
christoffer hofs
I mentioned Erotomania because it is DT's most played instrumental, specially by other people.
But, yes, Stream of Consciousness is also fantastic, and it should be an honorable mention at least.
But is only Hard Rock and Heavy. Erotomania is Progressive!!! Stream of Conciousness, The Dance of the Eternity and Instrumedley is Prog. too!!!
Cotramjoxxx And Malmsteen's Black Star is neoclassical. That doesn't mean that they are also hard rock or heavy metal.
Any instrumental song, by hard rock and heavy metal groups, has progressive traits, specially Satriani's and Steve Vai's.
Guess they didnt know about Dream Theater....
1.Stargazer- Ritchie Blacmore 2.Child in time- Ritchie Blackmore 3.Kill the king- Ritchie Blackmore
No Dream Theater? Or JP?
So what in the hell is Buckethead doing in the list if its only "hard rock and heavy metal" he is also prog. Aside from that Dream Theater is Metal. Prog metal is a subgenre of metal, like trash metal ( Metallica), either way it is metal.
Snake Plissken You're right, Progressive metal is a part of metal. I would have loved to see Warmen or Dream Theater there!
Right? Guitar solo from "As I Am" or "Under a Glass Moon" should be on here for sure.
lukas akerlund or even Go Further by Tak Matsumoto. His solo work is amazing, almost better than his work with B'z.
lukas akerlund Saying Buckethead sucks is like saying Pink Floyd isn't real music.
Yngwie
Pronounced:
ING VAY
Not ING WEE
The Allman Brothers were the first rock band to do instrumentals (that I noticed) and I still love their stuff.
The shadows is a good instrumental rock band!
I would have been so pissed beyond belief if For the Love of God weren't on here.
I still prefer tender surrender
@@mirkecWii Same
TheCreepingDeath1984 That is more of s rhythm than a lead song. They clearly prefer lead. For the love of god is also just so much more epic.
I think I'm on to something here.. Steve Vai is a puppet, being controlled by his guitars.
#1 Orion
#2 The Call of Ktulu
#3 To Live is To Die
#4 Anesthesia
#5 LA Villa Strangiato
#6 Transilvania
#7 Blue Monday
#8 Eruption
#9 The Extrimist
#10
Into the Lungs of Hell by Megadeth?
+Voitto Kotiaho too many megadeth songs have potential for this list
+Emile-Arthur Oosterlynck What? Megadeth doesnt have that many instrumentals.
+Pride Yes they do, thats exactly what Into the Lungs of Hell is
lucclone8 I know that Into The Lungs Of Hell is an instrumental, but how many other instrumentals do they have? Not many, i think.
Or Dialectic Chaos
Well my favourite is building the church by steve vai
I know Binge and Grab by Buckethead has lyrics or whatever, but the instrumental version is amazing, in my opinion, and the main riff is somewhere in my top 10 favourite riffs of all time.
The call of ktulu is all, all, all, written by mustaine.
Alitudes > all
Yes
Transylvania over all.
+Svil Buscus by who?
WeWantYouToStay IRON FUCKING MAIDEN. Altitudes is good, but the riff carnage in Transylvania is better
Kinda sad other G3 guitarists like John Petrucci and Steve Morse couldn't make it on here, but hey, gotta give the guys at Watchmojo credit for getting the 10 we did find here. Don't worry WM, I still love you.
Also, For The Love Of God, Vai is the best! :D
No dream theater da fuck
Wait, I can't see Into the Lungs of Hell here!
3. Cathedral- Van Halen
2. Spanish Fly- Van Halen
1. Eruption- Van Halen
I find your lack of Dream Theater disturbing...
You are disturbing. Dream Theater SUCKS
+Leo B Haters do not concern me, admiral.
+Leo B
To each to their own, I guess. But don't diss people because they like what you don't like.
Leo B I see you are everywhere bashing on DT. C'mon, they really make you look like shit as a musician. I don't see other explanation for your hate.
Sad that Anestheia pulling teeth didnt make the list
dont worry bro, you would fuck up too if you were told to do a top 10 justin beiber list ;)
Haha yes. Sad but true.
The dance of eternity by Dream Theater is awesome too!
Vai. Always and forever!
